Since I can remember I have been interested in nature and especially birds! Wildlife photography provides me with a unique opportunity to capture special moments in time, portraying the uniqueness of even the most common birds and animals around us. Birds are particularly special to me and present a unique challenge to photograph! I always aim to show some action or behaviour in my photography and as a result need to spend time with the subject to capture some activity in an image!

My bird and wildlife images have been published extensively over the past few years. I regularly contribute to various magazines including African Birdlife as well as numerous other glossy publications, calendars and advertorial material. I have also received several local and international awards for my photography.

We all have to start and learn somewhere how to take that perfect wildlife photograph. Chris van Rooyen and I started presenting workshops and leading photo safaris during 2005! It is a wonderful experience to share knowledge, sightings and images with other keen bird and wildlife photographers! Digital imaging has also brought about the challenge and unique opportunity to process each image with specialised control and I have over time learnt the intricacies of image processing and manipulation to get the most out of that image that you captured in the field!

I am based in Johannesburg South Africa but make sure that I travel around frequently, whether itís even just a quick afternoon outing to a local bird sanctuary or a week long excursion to a wildlife destination somewhere in Africa!

Chris van Rooyen

Chris van Rooyen lives in Johannesburg and travels all over southern Africa to capture images of birds, his favourite photographic subjects. His images have been published in a wide range of magazines, books and calendars and he has received awards on several occasions. Chris is an ornithologist by profession which gives him a unique understanding of his subject matter.

This, coupled with his outstanding artistic abilities (both as photographer and painter of birds) has enabled him to cross the line between the mere recording of natural history into the realm of pure art.
