Instructional photo safari – Zambezi River (Caprivi Mutoya Lodge)
Join us on this exclusive instructional photo safari along the Zambezi River in Namibia to photograph Carmine Bee-eaters, Skimmers and Fish Eagles along the spectacular Zambezi River. This event is aimed at bird and wildlife photography enthusiasts who want to improve and refine their photographic skills.
For the bird photographer, the Zambezi river is a place of endless opportunities, but above all it is a place to photograph bee-eaters and African Skimmers. It hosts a colony of Carmine Bee-eaters, reputed to be the biggest in southern Africa, with thousands of birds breeding along a 100m stretch of the Zambezi River. The colony is accessible by boat or by car, and as long as the photographers remain at least 20 metres from the breeding birds, they can photograph at leisure as the birds are completely at ease and carry on with their daily activities. The venue offers truly spectacular opportunities for both flight and portrait photography of these feathered jewels, and we will be spending some mornings at the colony.
The lodge is situated in riverine forest alongside a tranquil backwater lake of the Zambezi River in the Caprivi region of Namibia. The lodge area itself is teeming with birdlife, including Little Bee-eaters, White-fronted Bee-eaters, Tropical and Swamp Boubous, White-crowned Lapwings, and Hartlaub’s Babblers. The river also offers great opportunities for Pied Kingfishers, Giant Kingfishers, Little Egrets, Green-backed Herons and African Fish Eagles.
The opportunities for African Skimmers are no less exciting. This graceful bird breeds on the white sand banks of the river, and they remain there all year round. They allow a close approach by boat and, as with the bee-eaters, opportunities for both flight and portrait photography from the boats are spectacular.
The Zambezi is not only about bee-eaters and skimmers. Numerous other water birds are abundant along the river and ample opportunities exist to photograph them. African Fish-eagles are also common and they have become very habituated to fishermen on boats and with good planning one is virtually guaranteed to go home with stunning images of these spectacular raptors snatching fish or perched on the side of the channel.
We will meet you in Kasane, Botswana from where we will be picked up and transported to the lodge, a 2 hour drive away, where we will arrive late afternoon, in time for some photography in and around the lodge gardens. You will be staying in a two-bed chalet with an en-suite bathroom which you will share with another photographer (or your partner if he/she is accompanying you). Single supplement rates are available on request.
The party is limited to a small group to ensure that we can give you the personalized attention that has become our trade mark. THE PRICE EXCLUDES TRAVEL COST TO AND FROM KASANE but includes transfers to and from Kasane, 5 nights of accommodation, all meals and photographic tuition. DRINKS ARE FOR YOUR OWN ACCOUNT.
